Performance Contact Lenses

Step aside steroids! There's a new sports enhancer in town! And it's legal (so far...)! Performance enhancing contact lenses are rapidly making their way to the front lines as the latest development in sports enhancement.

In April of 2005, Brian Roberts of the Baltimore Orioles had himself the opportunity to test-drive these new amber tinted lenses, and he was hitting .444 with five home runs. Coincidence? You tell me, but it definitely looks promising.

These amber-tinted performance enhancing lenses were developed by Nike and Bausch & Lomb, and after FDA approval in May 2005, they are being marketed as Nike Maxsight. The amber tint in the lenses works to block out blue light, which enhances vision (particularly of key elements such as the grass and the ball). Amber tinted lenses also reduce glare from the sun. One of the biggest advantages of this is the decreased need to squint in the sun.

Fast-moving sports such as baseball, soccer, and tennis are often played in variable light, so amber tinted lenses are ideal. For sports such as golf, football, and running, which are played in bright light, Nike Maxsight lenses are available in a gray-green tint.

What do Amber Tinted Lenses Look Like?

Amber tinted lenses can actually be a little scary-looking, as they turn the iris red. For the wearer, these contacts will make the world appear more yellow, just like when you wear yellow or orange tinted sunglasses.

Who Can Wear Nike Maxsight lenses?

Currently Nike Maxsight lenses are available for daily wear in the correction of myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness). Nike Maxsight lenses are also available for people with 20/20 vision.

Nike Maxsight lenses are not exclusive to athletes. Even if you don't play sports, Nike Maxsight lenses may just be right for you. If you spend a lot of time outside and find that you squint a lot on sunny days, Maxsight lenses may just be the thing for you - to reduce eyestrain and improve everyday vision.
