Extended Wear Lenses

The concept of extended wear contact lenses has been around for ages, but due to the potential health risks associated with prolonged contact lens wear, it's only recently that technology has caught up to concept. The extended wear contact lenses of today are far superior to the ones of yesterday and offer truly comfortable continuous wear.

How do extended wear contact lenses differ from the others? There are two very important obstacles to overcome with extended wear lenses. First, oxygen must be able to easily get from the air into the eye, and second the contact lenses must be able to resist build-up of protein and other substances such as bacteria. These two obstacles are overcome with a new highly permeable silicon hydrogel material, making them a much safer option than the extended wear contact lenses of yesterday.

While extended wear contact lenses do pose a certain amount of health risk simply because they are worn for an extended period of time, you may find that for you, the benefits outweigh these potential risks. The benefits are listed below:

At the time of writing only two soft contact lens types have been approved for 30-day extended wear, Focus Night & Day and Bausch & Lomb Pure Vision. Both are available in Canada, while PureVision by Bausch & Lomb is pending approval in the United States.
